Why I love David Letterman

Everyone knows Fidel Castro just stepped down, but only Dave could make me laugh out loud about Fidel's successor:

"Many observers believe Fidel Castro will either be replaced by his brother Raul, or by his idiot son, Fidel W. Castro."
Ha ha ha ha ha....

A love note to Big Pharma

Your commercials that attempt to scare senior citizens out of supporting negotiation of drug prices are REPREHENSIBLE, as are the Rethuglican senators who blocked a bill this week that would have allowed negotiation by Medicare.
Lying, greedy, evil criminal scum is what you are, and don't you think for one moment that nobody notices.

Impeach. Please, America depends on it.

Death wherever he goes

Sadly, the Honolulu motorcycle police officer who was critically injured while escorting President Bush's motorcade last week, died Sunday. Steve Favela was only 30 years old, and he leaves behind his wife and four small children. Our deepest sympathies go out to Officer Favela's family. I doubt that they will ever feel thankful on [...]

Michael Brown is O-U-T

WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown, the principal target of harsh criticism of the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina, was relieved of his onsite command Friday.
He will be replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen, who was overseeing New Orleans relief, recovery and rescue efforts, Homeland Security Secretary Michael [...]

To hell and back

Two paramedics who were trapped in New Orleans by Katrina while attending a conference there, have written the following eyewitness report describing their experiences trying to evacuate. Who would have believed that a portion of the good ol' U.S.A. could become much like a third world country in the span of a mere few [...]

Live from New Orleans

An employee of an Internet company in New Orleans is blogging about the aftermath of Katrina, with regular updates here. This is the real news you won't see in the mainstream media, and it isn't pretty. In one entry from September 1st, he describes the desperation of survivors seeking help from the authorities, [...]

What have we learned since 9/11?

The following was posted on an email list I belong to. In my other life I do some non-profit work in health care reform and patient rights advocacy, and as a result I have developed a particular disdain for insurance companies and the government regulators who fail to regulate them. I have a hunch [...]

Weapon of Mass Protection

Meanwhile, Mr. Bush staunchly refuses to meet with Cindy Sheehan to explain why he sent her son, Casey, to Iraq to die. Come on, Shrubby, you can do it. [...]

Pig People from Outer Space

Consumer advocates said today that California should set a national example by regulating health insurance overhead costs as insurance company profits continue to see double digit increases. The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights (FTCR) cited data released today showing that HMO profits increased 10.7 percent in 2004 after an 80 percent increase in 2003, [...]

Blue Humor

Some purple prose about America's red/blue state split
RICHARD R. AGUIRRE

This little gem came to me from Jan Davies, our former (and beloved) cops and courts reporter at the SJ. It's an e-mail zig-zagging through cyberspace and delighting or bugging people, depending on their political views.
It's a funny and [...]
